What Are the Perth Royal Food Awards?

The Perth Royal Food Awards, organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia (RASWA), are among the top food competitions in Australia. These awards celebrate the excellence and innovation of food producers across the country, setting benchmarks for quality and craftsmanship in various categories, including chocolate, wine, dairy, and more. The Chocolate Awards, introduced as a standalone competition in 2017, aim to recognise and elevate the fine quality chocolate industry in Western Australia and beyond.

How Did the Judging Work?

The judging process at the Perth Royal Food Awards is rigorous and thorough, designed to ensure that only the finest products receive recognition. Entries are evaluated by a panel of expert judges, including seasoned chocolatiers, pastry chefs, and industry professionals with extensive experience and a keen eye for quality.

Judging Criteria for Chocolate Bars:

  1. Good Shine with No Marks: The chocolate must not be dull in appearance (30 points).
  2. Clean Snap: A clean, crisp break indicating well-tempered chocolate (20 points).
  3. Compact Structure: The bar must have a uniform, solid structure (10 points).
  4. Smooth Texture: The texture should be smooth and free from graininess (20 points).
  5. Flavour: The flavour profile must be balanced and pleasing (20 points).

Each entry is scored on a 100-point system, with medals awarded based on the following scale:

  • Gold: 90.0 points and above
  • Silver: 82.0 – 89.9 points
  • Bronze: 74.0 – 81.9 points

The judging process is blind, ensuring impartiality, with each chocolate assessed purely on its merits.

How the Champion Awards Work

Entries that receive 90 or more points and a gold award are eligible for the champions competition. The gold medal entry with the highest points in its class is awarded the champion medal. There are several categories for Champion awards, including Champion Chocolate, Champion Milk Chocolate, and Champion Dark Chocolate, among others. Our Cashew Praline bar won the Champion Chocolate Bar with Inclusions, selected from eligible entries in Classes 1-4.

This recognition sets our Cashew Praline bar apart as the best in its category, showcasing our dedication to crafting chocolates that are not only delicious but also exceptional in quality.

This year, we selected ten of our products to enter in the Chocolate Bars with Inclusions category, specifically in the Dark Chocolate class. These entries met the criteria for bars with inclusions, as bars with just toppings were not eligible.
